2-23-15 Critique: Benjamin Von Wong.
DESCRIBE: The image is composed of a variety of different people, they are all posing a different way and telling a different story all under water. There is contrast between those that are dressed up in scuba gear and those who wear ordinary clothes in the water. The camera people each have proportioned objects in their hand. The form in the photo is of all human bodies and is very proportioned.
ANALYZE: The background in this image is underwater in a swimming pool. The foreground is The space in the image is very well balanced. There isn't a lot of color being used in the image, which makes the bright light from the top be emphasized. There is also movement in the picture, though the people swimming and the ruffles in the water. The shapes, are squares and would be considered as repetition as well.
INTERPRET: The artwork has very unified and expresses a happy mood. Everyone is working together to create an artwork that shows them working together to make a very unique image. It makes you feel happy how they can do this and make it flow. I think he was trying to show what can get done by working together.
EVALUATE: I believe the artwork is very good and it shows the type of artist Von Wong is. He does also get his point across that when working together you can get anything done.
SELF-GRADE: I believe that I deserve an A because i worked hard trying to see all the points Von Wong was trying to get across with this image.

Week 6
BIO:
Often described as a street artist, Fairey's name first began to appear in the news for wheat pasting (adorning public spaces with the artist's own posters, affixed to walls, signs and other elements by way of a water + wheat mixture--as in wallpaper paste), sticker tagging, and the numerous accompanying arrests that now comprise his official criminal record. http://arthistory.about.com/od/namesff/p/fairey.htm
Frank Shepard Fairey (born February 15, 1970) is an American contemporary street artist, graphic designer activist and illustrator who emerged from the skateboarding scene.[3] He first became known for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" (…OBEY…) sticker campaign, in which he appropriated images from the comedic supermarket tabloid Weekly World News. He became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election for his Barack Obama "Hope" poster. (wikipedia.org)
DESCRIBE: This artwork shows how Shepard created this artwork and how he changed it and made it his own. He didn't use much colors but mostly primary colors. He uses the colors red, white and blue signifying the United States. The outline and the lines throughout the picture are very clean and professional.
ANALYZE: There are many adjustments to this piece. The most important principle is how the artist makes the painting look realistic because of how he painted it to seem that there is a shadow. The artist used a pop art effect on the image. He also changes the background to red and the foreground is a picture of Obama. The artist took this portrait and created a creative new version giving a good message to the viewers. The space between each portrait gives emphasis to each single view.
INTERPRET: I believe this artwork has too much space in between each edited portrait. This gives a good message to the people because it promotes that not only us but the United States is in good hands. I don't think the result image is similar to the copy-writed image at all. This is probably a disclaimer to make sure he doesn't get sewed.
EVALUATE: This artwork is very successful because it creates a connection with the people politically and creatively. We also think it is successful because the original photographer loved what Shepard Fairey did to his picture and made it even better. It is also successful because little changes can change a picture and give it a bigger meaning and better reputation to the person who originally took the photo.
SELF-GRADE: I believe that I deserve an A+ because everything that was supposed to be done in a critique was done with max effort. I used the correct amount of words and completed every sections as expected.

2-11-15 Homage
2-9-15 Critique:
BIO: This man Andy Warhol was one of the most important artists of pop art, which became extremely popular in the second half of the twentieth century. He was shot and almost killed by a jealous girl. Though he is best remembered for his paintings of Campbell's soup cans, he also created hundreds of other works including commercial advertisements and films like movies.
DESCRIBE: This is an artwork of Marilyn Monroe smiling with a variety of colors instead of her normal skin tone. The background of the image is a simple color that is a shade of blue which probably emphasizes the head of the woman. The sharp colors that are shown contrast against one another and the image resembles a portrait of Marilyn Monroe that he edited on his own
ANALYZE: The contrast of this image is very strong and the shape is well done as if it had been a photograph. Due to the low amount of anything else besides the image of Marilyn Monroe's face the image is iconic as it is very similar to an icon of an object for propaganda.
INTERPRET: The mood that is revealed in this artwork is a sort of neutral mood as the variety of colors do not do much to the image. It brings a real emotional feeling in the viewer as it is various colors that have been used on an ordinary image.
EVALUATE: We believe the artwork is successful as a pop artwork as it has a variety of colors placed over the pop culture icon Marilyn Monroe. He used a variety of art concepts to make his art work pretty.
SELF-GRADE: We believe this critique is deserving of 100% because it is done exactly as expected and all words are used appropriately.

3/17 St. Patrick's Day
Critique: Charley Harper. Due: F. 2/6. All 4 parts. This week only, you can work with a partner. Credit both your names.
BIO: Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 – June 10, 2007) was a Cincinnati-based American Modernist artist. He was best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations. Born in Frenchton, West Virginia in 1922, Harper's upbringing on his family farm influenced his work to his last days.
DESCRIBE: The art piece is very colorful and full of detail. All of the animals in the image are randomly placed with as much space being used up as possible. The proportions of all the animals are around the same which is interesting as some of these animals are bigger than others which is something the artist did intentionally to give an environmental feeling to the observer.
ANALYZE: The variety of animals is very interesting as the artist is contrasting different kinds of creatures that are found both on land and in water. The varietyof colors and animals all make the image have no real natural movement that your eye wants to follow because that is the way the human eye functions.
INTERPRET: The artwork has a sort of inspirational mood that is neutral as there are multiple colors and sort of brings about a feeling of interest in the natural world. The animals are all juxtaposed in a way to make someone look and see the variety of creatures there are in the world. There are about 40 animals presented.
EVALUATE: We think this artwork is successful as it does bring about a feeling of natural wonder to the viewer. There all too many animals that anyone can like at least one animal in this piece of art. It makes the viewer appreciate the wide variety of animals in the world with a simple style of art that are all scattered throughout the artwork and believe that anything can be done.
SELF-GRADE: We believe that we deserve an A in this critique because we used the correct amount of words and all sections are done as excepted to achieve maximum credit for this assignment.

Kid Day Art. Due: End of class today. Enjoy.
1-28-15 CRITIQUE
BIO: Simone Legno was born on June 16, 1977 and is an Italian artist best known for the creation of the "tokidoki" brand. He tries his best to stay away from his homeland in Italy. Legno's artworks are influenced by his interest and experience in Japan and its culture, as well as street art, graffiti and wardrobe.
DESCRIBE: In this artwork the artist includes bright colors that provide a happy and meaningful appearance. There are a lot of different shapes, lines, designs and patterns in the painting. There is a tremendous amount of detail and it shows how he really loves what he does and you should to.
ANALYZE: The most important principle of this artwork is the unremarkable amount of detail and time took to make such a cheerful piece of art. There is not much space in the art, and the shape is relatively awkward as well as the form is questionable. He really fits as such as he can to express himself as much as possible.
INTERPRET: We are entitled to the fact that the artist has a repetition in the art to squeeze a unity and balance feeling out of the art with all the different things he is inspired by. The art is more of a pop art feeling because it has a variety of elements added into this painting that seem old fashioned.
EVALUATE: All in all, we believe that Simone Legno’s artwork “tokidoki” gives a meaningful message to its observers and expresses/ exaggerates the fact of being unique and creative . Simone Legno’s artwork is very persuasive and full of meaning enough to make someone want to try to copy the way of this specific art piece.
SELFGRADE: We are sure that this critique is deserving of full credit (100%) because all sections were done with time and creativity to describe this artist and his work. We highlighted vocabulary words that are important and everything else is done as expected.

2/14 Valentine's Day. Single Appreciation Day (SAD)
week 2
Critique: Sarah Stieber. All 4 parts. This week only, you can work with a partner. Credit both your names..
BIO: Sarah Stieber is from southern California. She is a young sounding and looking artist, and she’s been told many times that her paintings capture the particular air and feel of the region because she is inspired to make everything look happy and colored with meaning.
DESCRIBE: In this artwork the artist includes a lot of bright colors that makes the painting exaggerated with tension and fun. There are a lot of different shapes, lines, designs and patterns in the painting. The painting gives a feeling of relaxation and joy, the only thing you need to live a good life in the end.
ANALYZE: The most important segment of the artwork is the use of many different bright, unique colors. There is a unity expressed in the painting with all the colors combining giving a “whimsical electric realism” feeling , which is what she believes is the main aspect of all her works. This describes passion using different shading and highlights as if the sun were actually shining.
INTERPRET: It is believed that this art work by Sarah puts the viewer in a good mood because she uses many bright colors instead of dark colors. We think she decided conduct this painting because she is showing that she likes to have fun and will be for the rest of her life.
EVALUATE: Overall we think that this art work was very successful because the message that it gives very positive emotions that you should not care about what other people have to say about you and interpret your own thoughts.
SELF GRADE: This critique deserves an A+ because we completed all segments correctly and use the correct word and right amounts of them. We made the impression that Understanding Sarah Stieber needs a lot of work and concentration. ( Nick and Alex)

Critique: Margaret Keane. As good karma, just do the "Describe" section (50 words) since it's still Week 1. Due: End of class today.
This is a painting by Margaret Keane. The picture shows 7 kids with really big eyes, which was a Margaret trade mark she has lots of picture with kids with big eyes. what you see in this particular one is kids that look sad and in one image you see a tear in the eye of a child and the backgrounds are sort of creepy. Also there is a black cat in one of the picture and even the cat looks sad just like the kids. The big eyes give the image a weird vibe not a good one but this is considered a good painting because of its creepiness just like all of Margaret images she has a great talent and shows that in the image above

Self-Portrait. Create a mostly original self-portrait, self-grade and explain why. Artwork should reflect 30 min. or more.
Self Grade: I deserve an A because I used a original picture of me and a background plus i used two pictures that i cropped and placed also used filters and opacity, i also put some text in it.
This is some of my best artworks. The themes include the 4 greatest basketball players to ever play in the NBA in my opinion, next is Thanksgiving football with the quarterbacks that were playing that day, following that was another thanksgiving image, then an artwork for gym day and etc. 1 weakness i have is not picking the best backgrounds. 1 strength is my ability to crop images. I've grown a lot since i first started and im looking forward to becoming better.
2. Critique (Just Describe and not the other 3 portions.)
Describe: This is an artwork by Mr. Lim. Its a very complex image. He turned a picture he took and made it even more original, the emphasis is on his 3 kids in the foreground . It seems like it could be a Happy holidays postcard. The color you notice off the bat is the blood red and the children's faces have white colored faces. Shapes include 3 heads and 3 arms. In the background you can see some sort of pictures on the wall. He also uses text in two languages which caught my eye.
Grade: I would give this artwork an A (95%) for its use of all the major elements of art.

18.3 Critique (DESCRIBE). Write a 50 word critique describing this artwork by Norman Rockwell.
18.3 Critique (DESCRIBE). Write a 50 word critique describing this artwork by Norman Rockwell.
I'm critiquing this artwork by Norman Rockwell Four Freedom's Series So for composition I see lots of faces of humans. He basically makes this a montage. In the foreground you could notice an African American man, in the background you see elderly white people. It seems like they all joined together in prayer. Norman juxtaposed the faces of the people together in different sizes. All the people that are in the prayer are all different shades of skin. Then at the top of the image i see he used text hes basically saying people should have the freedom of religion and it don't matter the skin color . The shapes are those of human faces
BIO: Norman Rockwell was born in New York City on February 3, 1894. Talented at a young age, he received his first commission at age 17. In 1916, he created the first of 321 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Rockwell's Americana images were loved by the public, but not embraced by critics. He created World War II posters and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. He died on November 8, 1978.
DESCRIBE: This art piece is of a Woman who seems to be confident and willing to fight for her country and is waiting for her chance to do so. The lady seems to be well prepared and tough enough to handle a fight with her supplies she has equipped. She has badges on her shirt making it clear that she has accomplished many things in her life. A burger is in her hand and it seems figurative which allows you to see the skills of Norman.
ANALYZE: The art piece is very balanced as you can see the background conotates to woman, it symbolizes America. There is a lot of left over space in thebackground which puts an emphasis on the foreground focusing on the woman . The woman has a weapon on her that makes it seem she knows how to fight. She also is stepping on Adolf Hitlers face to show she has power and belief in herself.
INTERPRET: The image justifies the fact of the artist who drew it is American because of the American flag and a burger, every American loves burgers. The whole piece has a connection because the war is upon us and Americans can and will defend their country.
EVALUATE: I believe this picture is successful because it represents the whole idea or a little part of the war and this artist believes that woman can and should be able to help out their own country.
SELF-GRADE: I believe I deserve an A+ because I followed the format and wrote over the 50 words requirement in each section. I described the piece with the appropriate amount and use of elements. I took the time to conduct a great explanation of this artist and let him be known.

Banksy. Due: F., 12/5/14.

He is known for his artwork (graffiti) executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. He draws about political and social commentary and you can find the art in walls anywhere.
DESCRIBE: Banksy painted his artwork on a white background and depicts a man that is juxtaposed with the words "follow your dreams" and they are covered with the word "cancelled". The image of the man is also very detailed and has exhibits form, the tubes he has in his arms and other tools. The mans shirt is black so that it contrasts with the background.
ANALYZE: The composition of the art piece has the ability to represent what is going on with the interpretation of what and how you will accomplish your dreams. There is space left on the sides of the piece to bring emphasis to the main controversy at hand. The font exemplifies the tragedy of dreams being cancelled, the combination of the painting and man beginning to fade shows the sorrow of the artwork.
INTERPRET: I believe that the mood the artist is trying to convey through his artwork is one where the idea of following your dreams is no longer done and it brings the a sad sort of mood. The cancellation of following your dreams is something that is sure to make some people feel upset over the way that your dreams will not be coming true.
EVALUATE: I believe that this artwork is successful because the artist represented his idea through a well drawn and clear painting containing many elements of art. The image contrasts well with the background. It provides a good feeling of how it is to have your dreams literally cancelled and cant help it.
SELF-GRADE: I believe I deserve an A+ because I followed the format and wrote over the 50 words requirement in each section. I described the piece with the appropriate amount and use of elements. I took the time to conduct a great explanation of this artist.

Week 16
BIO: Keith Allen Haring (May 4, 1958 – February 16, 1990) was an artist and social activist whose work responded to the New York City street culture of the 1980s by expressing concepts of birth, death and war. Haring's imagery has become a widely recognized visual language of the 20th century. (Source: Wikipedia.)
Key words: pop art, graffiti art, activism
Describe: Keith Haring is using lines to create art and trying to convey a positive message.
Analyze: Keith uses lines to create shapes, he shows lots of balance and very interesting color selection. He puts lots of emphasis on the heart at the center of picture. He also shows movement with the figures. This is all important because the without all these principles we wouldn't have this image he used all this and combined them together to create this complex piece of art.
Interpret: The mood people get from this would be love because of the heart and the world. Might get the feeling to spread love to the world and thats how Keith would have wanted it to be because at the time people weren't welcoming to those with the HIV disease.
Evaluate: I believe that it was successful getting the message across that you shouldn't judge people but rather help them. I believe he helped bring more awareness to the disease just by creating art like this image.
